After I posted my last post on Facebook, many of you asked about the Recitation Folder. We typically do recitation after morning devotions and before we start school. When Anna was in Second grade, we used Memoria press for our home school curriculum. What I liked most about their curriculum was how they encouraged recitation. Even though we no longer use Memoria Press, you can order their recitation's separately. If you go to their website, I believe it is $3 to download each grade levels recitation and there is no shipping cost. They do recitation up to seventh grade. In my folder, along with the Memoria recitations, I have included my own. Some of my own are also in Memoria's recitation.
Here is list of what you would find in my folder. Of course, the beautiful thing about homeschooling, is that you can compose your recitation folder in accordance to what is important to your family. In fact, one family at our church had an interest in England. They had visited there several times and much of their recitation folder was centered around England and Scripture. I might add that a lot of these things I have put to song or rhyme. We find that to be a tremendous help with memorizing. No, we do not cover each page everyday. We are working at mastering a few things at a time and then we move on.
Here is what I have for now...
Bible passages we are memorizing (for now it is Matthew 5)
Bible passages that I want my kids to memorize during their home school journey
New hymns that I want the children to learn
Books of the Old Testament
Books of the New Testament
Important History dates put to rhymes
United States Presidents
States and Capitals
The Ten Commandments
The 12 Disciples
The Seven Churches of Revelation
Order of the Planets
Multiplication Tables ( In my opinion, I think more focus needs to be on the basics )
Liquid/Dry/Linear Measurement Conversions
Countries and Capitals
The five oceans
The seven continents
Excerpts from famous speeches
The rest of my folder is composed of Memoria press recitation. This consists of about 80 pages of random facts from all subjects. What you could put in such a folder is endless! Here are a few pictures.
