The Best Gift

Today, during devotions with the kids, I somehow ended up talking a little (actually a long time) about gifts. With Christmas right around the corner, the timing seemed right. However, this can pertain to gifts at any time of the year. It is always a blessing and encouragement to receive a gift and it is always a privilege to be on the giving end. Gift giving is beautiful. We  do exchange gifts in our home on Christmas, but probably on a much smaller scale than most. We aim for simplicity the best we can.  Today, I tried to remind my children, again, that this earth is fleeting. It is so easy to have our eyes and hearts pulled elsewhere, especially during this time of year. The best gift we can ever receive, cannot be purchased by our earthly hands or through any earthly labors of our own. It will not be beautifully wrapped under a tree. The best gift we can ever receive, will not be left with the rest of our earthly possessions when our work on earth is done. The best gift we can receive, will fulfill us with such contentment, that should we never receive another gift, our hearts would be forever contented.

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" Mark 8:36-37

"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10
